A NUMBER of Japanese mobile phone companies have shown off new handsets that use similar motion-detecting technology to the Nintendo Wii video-game console.
The D904i from NTT DoCoMo, Japan's top mobile carrier, contains a motion sensor that detects shaking and tilting. Instead of using a keypad, users can move the handset like a tennis racquet or fishing rod in easy-to-play games similar to those on the Wii. Two other new phones, by Sharp and Matsushita Electric Industrial, use built-in cameras to detect motion. For example, users can control a hip-hop dancer by moving a finger in front of the camera.
